Rhinozeros - NoDrums?

Rhinoceros - NoDrums?

For our new program "NdDrums" we formed a trio with Frederik Heisler on Drums.

After we played in a duo with for years, we spontaneous formed a trio with Frederik Heisler on drums for gig in Basel. We all immediately felt the potential of this collaboration and decided to form a band. At that time I was living in Dublin, teaching at the Newpark Centre of Music. I wrote a lot of new songs in Ireland, totally overwhelmed by the wideness and the power of the sea. As Florian was still living in Switzerland we sent each other our musical ideas and sketches and as soon as I moved back to Bern we arranged the new songs. Fred seemed to be a natural extension of our duo and added so much more than drumming to our sound. Our new program “NoDrums?” is dedicated to our shared passion for song writing.

Collaborations with other stage arts make it possible for us to experiment with musical structures in a completely refreshing way.

  • Collaboration with Samantha Brunner (fine arts) in 2013, "Songs for misfits": Songs for the ones that don't normally get enough aknowlegements in everyday life:  For creatures that only exist in our minds, for megalomaniacs and for the ones that are simply too small to be seen. Being an outsider can be brutal and merciless, but it also creates a biotope for fairly bizarre and at times very bright personalities. The very distinct nature of Samantha's drawings make these characters come alive immediately and expands the duo to a extraordinary trio.
  • Rhinozeros - Live to "Bunt und Schwarz"; a children's dance performance by the "AKAR Kids" 2014: With cover songs and originals we underlined the intuitive creativity of these kids. We developed most of the piece live in rehearsals with the kids and the two directoers Laura Imperiali and Britta Gärtner.
  • Rhinoceros - live to Buster Keaton's "Our Hospitality" 2013: After our first performance in 2013 we immediatley added this movie to our repertoire. The uncommon line up with Vocals and Guitar is truly refreshing and poetic. With carefully composed parts as well as with improvised soundscapes the two we completely merge with this unique movie. (Kino Kunstmuseum, Bern, CH) A new live performance to a movie is planned in late 2014 in collaboration with the Institute for Incoherent Cinematography in Zuerich.

The two artists are developing their very own nature of performance by combinig dance and live music on a highly professional level. As they are both working with their own body as an instrument, the outcome of their performance is very natural and touching.

I am incredibly happy to be a part of this wonderful band. The four musicians create a band sound that manages to surprise and inspire me over and over again.
New ideas and possibilities arise through the playful use of improvisation as well as through the freedom of improvisation. I very easily get carried away, by the amazing groove and refreshing energy of this group. Thanks!

Rhinozeros Story

Rhinozeros Story

Rhinoceros: How it all started

The Rhinoceros is a very large mammal, and humans have not jet managed to domesticate it. Despite its large body it is agile and quick, and dew to its adaptability it has lived the planet for millions of years. Rhinos are known as loners at daytime, whereas they assemble at night to attend to their social duties.

We met in the music college in Bern. We played together in many different groups and bands, and started playing as a duo in 2011. We first played jazz standards, pop songs and ballads written by some of our musical heroes. One night we decided to record our first album, and therefore we arranged all the originals that we wrote in the last years for our Duo. Although the diversity of the songs was tremendous we decided to release them all together on one album. “Time to spoil…” became an absolutely colourful collection of jazz ballads, pop songs, improvisations and bizarre theatrical chansons. We toured through Switzerland with our little car, packed with amps, synthesizer, guitars and all kinds of toys. Some of the organizers were puzzled as they watched us unpacking. Despite all the warnings they expected a jazz-influences singer-songwriter duo. Our music was peculiar, without compromise and fairly bizarre. We sang and played about the characters of everyday life that aren’t very well known, and some listeners were overtaken by the distinct nature of our sound. I wrote the songs for “Time to spoil..” in a time where I barley listened  to music. I enjoyed the silence most and the songs were written without any musical influence. On our second tour we found ourselves in absolutely wonderful sounding rooms and decided to play some concerts without any equipment. Florian played a number of songs with open tunings and I enjoyed singing unplugged very much. I loved it, because I could play with the room and I could let go in a way that was new to me. In September 2013 I moved to Dublin to work at the Newpark Centre of music as a singing teacher in the Bachelor and Berklee course. The songs that I wrote in Ireland are inspired by the sea and by the quiet way I led my life. Florian also put down his new ideas and we shared them online. Whenever I came to Berne we rehearsed and arranged our new songs and slowly developed our concept for our new program “NoDrums?”. We first had the idea of recording beats and using them as a play along on stage. But after we played a spontaneous gig with Fred Heisler, it was very clear for all of us that we had to go on as a trio. We’re planning our first tour in autumn 2014.
